How It Works

Step 1:  Initial Getting to Know Each Other Call

Like dating, it is important to get to know each other first and see if we are a good fit.  I start off the process with an introductory call.  You tell me a little about yourself, what you are looking for, your career aspirations, your dislikes, what firm culture you are looking for, your desired salary, amongst a whole other host of things and I tell you about myself and we see if it’s a match.

Step 2:  Resume and Material Review

We hit it off and you send me your resume and other materials, such as a transcript, writing sample or deal sheet, depending on the firm’s requirements.  I do a deep dive into your materials and suggest comments, edits, formatting changes and anything else I think will make your application be the best it can be.

Step 3: Laying Out the Options

Based on our initial call, subsequent calls and emails and your application materials, I provide you with a list of job opportunities that are tailored to finding you your ideal next hopefully “forever” firm.

Step 4:  Putting Yourself Out There

After you’ve considered the opportunities I’ve sent you, you let me know which opportunities you are interested in and you want me to submit you to and I advocate on your behalf. This is all confidential of course.

Step 5:  It’s a Match!

This is when the process gets even more fun!  This is the interviewing portion of the lateral job search process.  If a firm likes what they see, they contact me to set up an initial interview with you.  Every firm does it differently.  Some firms may have you meet for what is called a “screener” interview, others may have you meet with two or more attorneys right off the bat, some may want in person on the first meeting, and others just a slew of zoom meetings.  Whatever a firm’s preference I am here to coach you throughout the process and make sure you feel confident and ready to chat to whomever they put in front of you.

Step 6:  The Negotiation

This stage of the process is where a recruiter is especially crucial to the lateral search process.  I am here not only to negotiate salary and take on the burden of those “uncomfortable” conversations but I can also negotiate signing bonuses, start dates, relocation expenses, title, class year and any other part of the deal.  As one of my candidates astutely pointed out, “you guys can play bad cop for us, just like I do with my clients.”

Step 7:   Feeling at Home

Congrats, you’ve made it and your first day at your new firm is over. The good news, is that I am here to make sure your transition goes smoothly. I offer continued support and advice as you get set up at your new firm. And I hope to be a part of your career journey for years to come!
